  4. This directory contains: 
  5.     README: (this file)
  6.     a release/ directory containing 3.0
  7.         source and "binary" releases for SPARCstations, DECstations, 
  8.         and HP 7xx.
  9.     a doc/ directory containing postscript copies of the documents,
  10.         including instructions for getting and installing a release.
  11.     a release.old/ directory containing 2.2
  12.         source and "binary" releases for SPARCstations, DECstations
  13.     a doc.old/ directory containing postscript copies of the documents
  14.         for the 2.2 release
  15.     a contrib/ directory for user-contributed, unsupported software
  16.  
  17. If you just want to get the documents, get the contents of the doc/
  18. directory.  (If you get the source release, the documents will 
  19. come along with it.)
  20.  
  21. If you want to see what's new with Version 3.0 (in detail, with
  22. pointers to the user guide), just get the postscript document 
  23. sm3docdiff.ps from doc/.
  24.  
  25. If you want to get a Storage Manager, get the following:
  26.     doc/install.ps  (postscript) or doc/install.ascii (ascii version)
  27. and
  28.     release/sm.src.3.0.tar.Z    (source release)
  29.     release/sm.<machine>.3.0.tar.Z    ("binary" release)
  30. where <machine> is one of {dec,sparc,hp}.  The
  31.  
  32. The install.{ps,ascii} contains all the instructions for 
  33. getting and installing a release.
  34.  
  35. The source release includes sources, test programs, and documentation.
  36.  
  37. If you want to get a Storage Manager, you have a choice:  build from
  38. scratch or build from a "binary" release.  We recommend the latter.
  39.  
  40. Even if you choose to build from the "binary" release, you
  41. have to get the source release.  The Storage Manager has to be
  42. configured for your site before some of the executables are
  43. built.  The "binary" releases contain those executables that 
  44. are not subject to the configuration process, and the libraries 
  45. needed to build the rest of the executables.  The release
  46. cannot be installed with GNU Make.

  53.             Known Bugs
  54.  
  55. * If the machine name is misspelled when specifying a client.mount
  56.   option in an option configuration file, the client may segmentation
  57.   fault without an error message.
  58.  
  59. * Deletion of bytes from large objects may not be properly
  60.   undone (when a transaction is aborted) or recovered after a crash.
  61.  
  62. Source fixes for these bugs are available in
  63. release/sm.src.patch.3.0.1.tar.Z.  "Untar" this file in the src/
  64. directory of the release and it will replace the necessary files.  You
  65. can then recompile the SM following the directions in the installation
  66. manual.

  69.         Future Plans for the Storage Manager
  70.  
  71. 3.0 is our last planned major release.  Bugs will be fixed with
  72. minor releases.  The SHORE (Scalable Heterogeneous Object REpository)
  73. server will be the successor to the Storage Manager.  Plans for SHORE
  74. include an emulator for the Storage Manager.
